Watch The Missing Chapter

Sometimes a story is better heard than read.

I’m reading The Missing Chapter from the beginning, one chapter at a time — although apparently social media has very definite opinions about how long I’m allowed to talk, so some chapters arrive in several parts.

This is the place where you can watch the whole thing in the right order, without hunting through Instagram or TikTok trying to work out where Part Three disappeared to.

These aren’t polished audiobooks or studio recordings. They’re me, reading the novel I wrote, occasionally stumbling over my own sentences, probably drinking too much coffee, and discovering that some passages are considerably harder to read aloud than they were to write.

Start at Chapter One, jump in wherever you like, or follow along as I add new recordings.

Headphones optional. Early-90s soundtrack strongly encouraged.

Three words in a chat window...'I Loved You'...

Chapter One Part One The Shape I Remember…

  • Chapter One Part One

It started with three words from someone I had loved when I was seventeen:

    “I loved you.”

The only problem was that he said them thirty-three years late.

    Chapter One Part Three

    Part Three

Memory is a funny bloody thing.

You can forget whole conversations and entire years, then remember exactly how a room felt, what somebody was wearing, or the song playing when something happened.

    Chapter One Part Four

    Part Four

At seventeen, you think you understand what is happening while you’re living it.

    Mostly, you don’t.

Sometimes it takes thirty-three years — and three unexpected words — before you can see the shape of it properly.

  • Chapter One Part Five

    Chapter One Part Five

There was the version of this story I remembered.

And then there was what actually happened.

The further I went back, the less those two things seemed to be the same.

    Chapter One Part Six

    Chapter One Part Six

Some memories survive because they were enormous.

Others survive because of one tiny, completely ordinary detail that somehow refuses to disappear.

    Chapter One Part Seven

    Chapter One Part Seven

First love isn’t only the person.

It’s the music. The places. Their family. The stupid jokes. The ordinary afternoons. And the version of yourself that only existed when you were with them.
