About Mallory Jones
I’m Mallory Jones, and I write about love, memory, music and the things we think we’ve successfully left behind.
The Missing Chapter began with a story I needed to write and became something rather bigger than I expected. It moves between the early 1990s and the present day, following first love, friendship, trauma, terrible decisions, brilliant music, and what happens when two people reconnect after thirty years of silence.
Music runs through the novel because that’s how I remember things. A song can take you back to a particular room, a particular person, or a version of yourself you thought had disappeared completely. The Missing Chapter belongs to the world of mixtapes, record shops, gigs, Melody Maker and early-90s Leeds — when discovering new music required considerably more effort than asking your phone.
This website is where I’ll share the writing as well as everything growing around it: extracts from the novel, chapter readings, music, photographs, memories, bits about Leeds, and probably occasional evidence that I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.
I’m currently sharing The Missing Chapter while working out exactly where it goes next.
If you’ve found your way here through Instagram, TikTok or Substack, hello. Have a look around, watch a chapter, read something, send me a message — and if a song, place or piece of the story brings back a memory of your own, I’d genuinely love to hear about it.
Welcome to The Missing Chapter.
Writing about first love, loud music, sexual awakening, and the things we probably should have dealt with thirty years ago.
